Is Delphian a good name for a character in a novel?
I’m writing a story (or trying to) and I’ve came to a part of the story where I would need to introduce a new character. I’m toying with the name Delphian, I think its a great name but I want to make sure it’s easy to read and doesn’t distract from the tale.
Here is some background information about exactly what the character should be-
-Male
-Adventurous
-Loyal
-Deep/Complex
-Strong

Delphian means dark; mysterious; secretive.

What do you think? Is it too distracting? Perfect? All suggestions welcome.
Thank you :)

i like it. but you should still come up with a few other names in case you dont like the name after all!

Question for mothers of boys?
My 4 1/2 year old son is awesome. He is a very quick learner and is great about organizing his room and keeping his toys in working order (has honestly never broken a toy) I have some questions I am hoping hat more experienced moms can help me out with (this is my first child. I have ALL girls in the family and I know that part of this is just because he is a boy, hence the reason that I would like help from mothers of boys =) )

1. His teacher talked to us yesterday (First time ever and he has been in school for 2 years) about his not listening to her when she asked him to sit/calm down during story time. We’ve noticed the same thing at home lately and am not sure what to do. He is very active so my husband and I are sure to do activities with him everyday to get all that energy out (hikes, bike rides, etc.) Last night I sat with him and talked to him about how it was distracting to his teacher when he acted like this and if he kept it up he would be going on more time outs at school. He has always been an active boy and has never really been able to sit and concentrate on one thing for too long. I’ve never allowed him to watch too much TV and even when I do let him he can never sit through a whole movie. (and no- we do not give him a lot of sugar. He never drinks soda andhardlyy ever has candy or sweets…)

2. One of the qualities that I just LOVE about my son is that he always wants to make people laugh. But, it comes with a price. I havecaughtt him pulling down his pants (in front of girls!) to make them laugh, or doing other veryinappropriatee things like that and when asked why he says he does it to make them laugh. My husband and I explain that its not ok, but he has done it like 3 times now! Please help!

3. Another thing that isn’t that big of a deal, but I would like advice on ties in with #1. He doesn’t like to draw or color or paint… When I pick him up from school the other kids will come with huge papers covered in paint. His always has three straight lines. ‘Their snakes’ he’ll say… Even when we sit to color with him he will be talking the whole time instead of coloring. I am nowafraidd that he is falling behind on his motor skills…

Please help with what ever you can Moms!

THANKS!!!

Stop being sexist. What does any of this have to do with him being a boy?
lundegaard_2 | Feb 04, 2010

Well I have a 6 year old and when I ask him to do something, I then (and usually always) have to say. I’ve just asked you to do something, now I’m going to count to 5 and I expect you to do it. This works well. His teacher should come up with her own method, see if this works for you and pass it on to her if it does.

You could try explaining that people don’t pull their pants down and it can upset some people, so it’s not really funny. Ask him to think of something else he can do that would be funny.

Don’t worry about drawing, maybe construction is more his thing. All little boys love making junk models with reels of sellotape and string. Tying string, cutting and making sellotape stick will help his fine motor skills. As will small lego or meccano sets.

he is being a typical boy of his age .
sounds as if he is disinterested in what he is being taught at school maybe he needs a bigger Challenge maybe constructing something where he uses his mind to figure out things or something like that that’s grabs his attention.
but of course he has to learn the basics so you have to hang on in there and keep at it
whyme | Feb 04, 2010

He’s a boy, lol, thats all I can say. My son, also very active, is now 6 and in 1st grade but in pre-K he couldnt sit still, and up until this year didnt like to draw. He wanted to run, jump and climb. Your child has only been alive for 4 1/2 years. He is still so young and wnats to have fun and its not easy for a kid that age to sit still listening to a teacher talk about letters and if coloring isnt his thing, he wont want to put forth much effort. I guess you can say my son used to make a lto of "snakes" too lol but that has also changed and he is an excellent listener now, no trouble, ever!
You are doing the right thing by providing him with a lot of active time and also explaining to hi what is expected of him at school but being the young boy he is, that will take time. He will continue to be put in time out and one day that will sink in. And he will mature and adjust to the rules. Praising him when he is a good listener is a wonderful way to emphasize how important it is to cooperate. Dont wait until he messes up to mention his behavior.
I dont think there is a whole lot you can do besides this(what your already doing anyway). I dont think he has adhd or anything like that but then again I never met him. But I did think my son was overactive but he simply was an active, happy kid! Give it time. I dont think this will follow himthrough life if you stick with the re-enforcements.
Funny, my daughter was never this way. She seemed to carry on adult like conversations at 3yo. Never had to be talked to about not listening and was always very focused so yes, I think its a boy thing,.lol

ADD:I agree with the contruction idea. My son loves to build and troubleshoot

all childern are diffrent hun try not to worry im sure he will be fine i have 3 boys aged 4 yrs and 5 yrs and 6 yrs and my 5yr old wont seem to take much leaning in whereas my 4yr old wants to sit and learn but seriously try not to worry as he is extremelly good with other things it could be that your son just dont like to colour in at all or draw pictures his behaviour tho seems so normal to me also iv caught my boys doing things like your son has as much as you dont like it he maybe doing it to get a little attention as in seeing how far he can push his luck i learnt just by simply ignoring it as best i could although we did tell our boys its naughty to do this i hope this helps you im sure your son will be just fine take care and try not to worry xx

Kind of disappointed and hurt, advice please?
Someone on here said this was a disturbing situation http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index; _ylt=AmnMd55F0unX6eqqyZEBwICZDH1G;_ylv=3 ?qid=20100209170805AAiS5XU Now I care about my cats with all my heart. But have a disabled person in our house (my grandma) that is hooked on IV and has all types of other medical equipment that the cats like to chew on and mess with. She cannot get up and is constantly being monitored. Maybe i exaggerated too much by saying "VERY dangerous" and sounded like a bad pet owner. I am sorry for that. But honestly, the area that my cats spend from 10 pm to 7 am and then 8 am to 1 pm is the size of a 2 bedroom apartment, literally. And they DO run so much that it is annoying sometimes (although cute) because they go wild. I am just hurt that someone would say something like this to me without even knowing what kind of a situation I am in.

Do you think what that person said, has truth to it? Because if it is true then I don’t know what else to do. They look happy to me. I already mentioned that in the former question. Yeah, I admit they only have three or four toys (there’s two 6 month old cats only) and I can probably bring in some more toys, which I will.
My grandma is in that area and it’s very huge. It’s hard to explain the landscape of my house. There is no room in that area. It’s just a big living room, dining room, kitchen, hall and all that good stuff. My grandma is in the living room because she likes it there and that’s where my parents put her so they can always keep an eye on her.

Your original question was lacking in details. You stated it was "VERY dangerous" without any elaboration. Without sufficient information, opinions can be stated that are not fact based.

Cats can do fine in much smaller areas than you provide. With a window to look out, many cats would be content to spend most of the time in the window watching the outside world.

Yes, you stated they start racing around once let out. But now you state they are six months old, and kittens of that age race around anyway.

When a cat purrs, they are receptive to human contact, and it often means they are content. They are giving you their answer, and that is the answer that counts.

If you have room, a cat tree can provide hours of fun and entertainment for kitties.
cat lover | Feb 09, 2010

If your grandmother is in her own room and doesn’t come out much, can’t the cats run around more? At 6 months they need a lot of exercise and being cooped up all the time is not a good thing. A few toys won’t do – they will get bored and get destructive.

Can you at least get a tall treehouse for them (6-7 feet tall) to put in your room? You need to figure out how to give them more freedom each day but not be around your grandmother.
Ocimom | Feb 09, 2010

Remember that cats like to go up so even with a small amount of space you can provide enrichment and exercise by adding vertical furniture (cat trees, etc). You can also add 10 minutes twice daily of playing with a laser. This way you can direct their attention and energy away from dangerous areas and towards safer portions of the house.

Good Luck!

OK so here is a random nerdy question about Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope..?
Why didnt Gran Moff Tarkin not just fire on the Yavin 5? Would that not have done the job and destroyed the moon with the Rebel base? Yeah I know stupid question but thats what I would have done! lol

That IS a nerdy question… but a fun one. Here’s my answer:

There was no reason to. He was absolutely positive that the Death Star was invincible. Sure, he was wrong, but he didn’t think so. There was no incentive to blow up the entire planet. Besides that, although I don’t know that much about Yavin 5, it may have been a significant planet. It may have been valuable in some way. Good base site? Good resources? Mining? Who knows? Regardless, there was no point in bothering, from his point of view. The Death Star could not be destroyed. Even when there was "some danger," he refused to even have his escape ship prepared. He was overconfident.

How to dress as Vanessa from Little Mermaid?
I want to dress as Ursula in the human form, Vanessa, from the Little Mermaid, for Halloween. Any suggestions? Hair, makeup, clothing, etc?

I can’t find any good images online, but I think the best outfit for you to wear for the character would be the one that she wears when Prince Eric first sees her, or what she’s wearing when Ariel overhears their plans to marry (same thing, without the cape).
http://photobucket.com/albums/c47/ddcoup les/ae24.gif

Far easier than the comical torn and stained wedding dress with a face full of starfish and cake (that wouldn’t be as pretty, either).

The biggest things to focus on would be Ariel-like hair, but with the part down the middle, and the obvious shell necklace. Besides that, just maintain bitter and evil facial features.

Good luck

Argument about aussies on craigslist has me curious. Please read?
–First post is by a lady who claims to breed "toy / mini australian shepherds."

I have a 3 year old, 8 pound black tri BET (blue eyed tri PRODUCER). ASDR registered, full registration is available-

Pet price
Breeding price

He LOVES to snuggle on the couch, is reserved around strangers, but will LOVE you, partially potty trained as he will mark, but isn’t terriable about it-I’m out of town right now, and will be back in the next week if you’d like to see him. This is a RARE breed, YES THERE ARE TOY AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERDS-I have an AKC 8 pound female, and. Tucker grew up in a kennel before I bought him, but has been inside my loving family, and is VERY SWEET!!! He will dance for you and and lick you!!

email me for more information-I’ll work wiht the price depending on yoru wants/your home, but hes not free, and keep in mind this is RARE and sought after- www.barbiedollsteacupaussies.com

–Second post is by a person discrediting her.

Toy aussies / Mini aussies are NOT real breeds!
Yes, they do EXIST but so does my Australian Bernard. But surprise, that’s not a real breed, just my australian st. bernard mix!

The AKC does not recognize "Mini aussies" or "toy aussies." No reputable kennel does! The ARBA recognizes ‘Minis’, but not ‘toy aussies’, have you heard of this association? Okay then. And it’s funny, the registries and clubs who do recognize and breed ‘Mini Aussies’ don’t even recognize the ‘toy aussies’ as a real breed.

It’s true with any breed… would you refer to a Yorkshire Terrier as a standard Yorkshire Terrier? No, because there is only one size (so anyone who’s paid hundreds for a ‘teacup yorkie’, you should have done your homework), the same is true with Rottweilers, Labradors, Jack Russell’s, etc.

So how do you get a miniature or toy aussie? Please read the excerpt:

Basically there are two ways to achieve smaller sizes–by inbreeding on naturally small dogs or by cross breeding to other small breeds to rush the miniaturization process. Obviously each approach has its problems.

Inbreeding reinforces desired traits, but also brings out the hidden genetic problems. So generations of inbreeding can cause a higher occurance of inherited problems like hip dysplasia, epilepsy, cataracts, auto immune problems and so on.

The other means is to cross breed. Some folks seem to think that if a dog looks sort of like an Australian Shepherd–merle coloration, wedge shaped head, longish coat and docked tail, that it must be an Aussie. Just because it waddles and quacks, doesn’t mean it is a duck!

Some of these breeders will incorporate other toy sized breeds to hurry the miniaturization process. This amounts to essentially breeding a mutt and fraudulently selling it as a purebred dog. A good way to make sure this doesn’t happen is to ask the breeder for records showing that several generations of dogs have been DNA tested proving that their parents are the dogs represented on the pedigree. This is a common place requirement in legitimately recognized breeds like the Australian Shepherd.

Reducing a dog to a toy size also can increase reproduction problems. Females may only be able have tiny litters of one to three pups, sometimes only by C-Section. Toy sized puppies can be born with a myriad of congenital defects, some apparent, some not. Remember, in nature, change takes place slowly. The breeders of miniature and toy breeds are forcing changes in the structure of their dogs at an astronomical pace.

The toy breeders are attempting to produce an entirely new breed variation on just a few generations at the expense of the health and well being of the animals. Reduced size brings about profound changes in soundness–such as the need for Cesareans–because of the rapidity of the change from large to small. The dog’s genetic code does not necessarily change in proportion to the reduction in size.

Toy dogs are often bug eyed or wall-eyed. The reduction in head size occurred faster than the reduction in eye size, thereby moving the eyes around to the sides of the head. Dogs bred for small size often have nervous system difficulties such as epilepsy.

Vets can provide you with a long grocery list of problems that they frequently see in association with the extreme miniaturization of a breed.

There are no doubt, healthy, happy miniature and toy sized Australian Shepherds, but how many others are having problems? Ask the breeder of the toy dog how many of the offspring he or she has followed up on throughout their lives? What sort of health clearances did these dogs have and how often were they checked. What is the mortality rate of the puppies?

What it comes down to is this: It has taken generations of careful breeding to produce consistency in the Australian Shepherd.

The goal of the original breed was to maintain a working ranchdog who was healthy and had a temperament suited for herding livestock and protecting the family home. Reputable b
Oh, I didn’t even notice it got cut off. I don’t know what the rest of the post said. But my question was did this person with the ‘toy’ aussie have grounds for what she was saying? Are they soon to be accepted by the AKC? But from what I’ve gathered, that’s not true. Thank you guys. I love this breed, and I didn’t think this BYB was right, but she was a little convincing.

I already know that the first person is a BYB and I love the second person.
Even the Australian Shepherd Club of America doesn’t recognize them. They and the AKC don’t support breeding them.

Running- I see no problem in what the second poster said. The OP is trying to trick people in to thinking they are selling a rare breed, when in reality they aren’t even acknowledged by reputable kennel clubs! The second poster is giving people FACTS so they won’t be scammed.

| Nov 05, 2009

Too true.
That lady who first posted was simply looking for some cash of some unsuspecting buyers.
Sigh.BYB.
BirdsandBooks | Nov 05, 2009

2nd one is correct. The ad is from a BYB. Main tipoff besides the size is rare & costs. Any "rare" is usually DQ which is why you don’t commonly see it as good breeders avoid it.
JOAN W | Nov 05, 2009

Read. Got cut off. But the second post makes several very valid points, and it is known that "Toy" Aussies were created by crossbreeding.

The seller sounds like a typical, greedy, crap-breeding douche.

What’s your question?
Loki ? Wolfchild | Nov 05, 2009

My personal opinion which is worth Squat is that the lady who posted in reference to the ad should of minded her own business. No where in the original ad did I see any request for OPINIONS.
runningridgeratterriers | Nov 05, 2009

The second post is absolutely correct.

The first post is propoganda from an unscrupulous breeder who is breeding for money only. What use would a "mini" Aussie have when working? Why would someone even need this mutation? If someone wants a small dog, buy a merle Sheltie.

This kind of "mutt" breeding to make breeds smaller or another color has been happening a lot lately. Take the Harlequin Minpin for example. This gene died out in the late 1940’s, so in order for a breeder to produce one now, they would have to bring in a breed where the gene still exists. Immediately the line becomes mutts. For years breeders have been mixing Chihuahuas with Minpins to make minpins smaller. Some pretty ugly cross-breeds in my opinion.

The Aussie is a working breed. They are bred to do a job, and need to be left alone and not mutated into some "apartment friendly" breed.
anne b | Nov 05, 2009

LOL!! Since I am the author of the excerpt in the second person’s reply (written almost six years ago), I obviously agree with the second person. :o )

I wrote that many years ago and feel the same way.

http://en.allexperts.com/q/Australian-Sh epherds-2555/Toy-Aussie.htm

______________

AKC is no where near accepting any size variety of the Australian shepherd because the parent club, USASA, does not support it and has (and will never) request it.

The miniature fancy is attempting to apply as a separate and distinct breed: The North American Shepherd, and may gain some headway in that area, although it is still a very controversial move for both the mini breeders and the Aussie breeders. The Toy breeders are rejected by all the aforementioned groups and unless they manage to prove themselves as a new breed under AKC’s requirement’s, they will not be approved.

volleyball game: Ball hog didn't let me hit any?
Ok so we have this Intramural… Its just friends against other friends but your team has to pay a fee for joining…not like schools versus other schools where people are actually varsity players…so well I’m a pretty OK volley ball player…I’m better than most of my female team mates who are a bit clumsy when receiving the ball but they serve well (unlike me…my service sucks i can’t do overhead serve)…we have 3 guys and about 5 girls in our team.
The thing is that this guy John used to be a volleyball varsity back in HS. and well the first game he was ok(shy quiet and he girls actually play)…but today…he practically hogged all the balls (60% of which failed to score). (There were 2-3 incidences where the ball was going to land PERFECTLY WITHIN MY REACH 100%SURE HIT BY ME BUT out of no where JOHN moves infront of me and HITS it…2-3 maybe 4 times…) after hitting it he passes it to the two other guys mike and joe. only THREE of them are playing (mostly because of John)…I was just standing there. John wouldn’t let me hit AT ALL…Joe and mike acknowledge my skills in receiving the balls thats why we won our first game…it was still fun and fair that time..but today totally sucked because of John. I feel bad we lost. It wouldn’t have been that way had John not acted that way…and we have around 6 more games to go and i don’t even feel like playing anymore. The girls were treated as statues. Minimal movement.
4got to mention…I was the only girl that they didn’t substitute…coz they said i was part of the "Top 6"…like I said they acknowledge my skills but didn’t let me hit any…
