Excalibur
Excalibur (1981)

IMDB rating: 7.40

Plot: As the title would suggest, it follows the travels of the legendary sword Excalibur through Arthurian myth, from the violent, powerful hands of Uther Pendragon, to a long-years’ rest in the stone to being redrawn by Uther’s son Arthur, who uses it to defeat the evil invaders and establish the great court of Camelot and the great Knights of the Round Table. It is there in Arthur’s glory years and in his decline, brought on by the love affair between his wife Guenevere and best friend and best knight Sir Lancelot, the Holy Grail Quest which produces many casualties among the knights, and the arrival of Mordred, the son Arthur had by his evil half-sister, the sorceress Morgana. Through it all, the magician Merlin watches over everything, always ready to throw in a Charm of Making when it’s called for.

Vegas Hotels, LasVegasDirect.com, and vegas weather in Dec?
1-) These are the hotels I’m looking at. Anyone have any suggestions, have you stayed at any? I’m looking for a hotel that has some things to do on site, but I won’t be spending a lot of time in the room. I’m 22, going with my 23 year old husband and his parents (48 &49) who like to gamble. I’m more interested in shows and rides.
Sahara
Luxor
Excalibur
MGM Grand
Vdara (By Bellagio)
Caesar’s Palace

2) Why is Caesar’s Palace such a popular hotel? What does it have to offer?

3) Has anyone ever used www.LasVegasDirect.com? Can you please tell me if it is reliable or not. It has a link to the BBB (better business bureau), so that means it HAS to be legitimate, right?

4) We will be in Vegas either the second or third week in December. How is the wether, can you still swim in pools, are attractions shut down (rides)?

5) Does anyone know of any ‘vegas packages’ (NOT plane and hotel) that are a value pack for shows, attractions, etc?

Thank you so much, I greatly appreciate it!

Never heard of that site. Go to the BBB site and check them out. Just because they have link to it doesn’t mean they have a good rating. Always check them out before giving them your hard earned money.

Eliminate the Sahara ( in the middle of nowhere at the north end of the strip ). Luxor is very tricky in there resort fees and one of the highest on the strip. Excalibur has a good location and the worst buffet in Las Vegas. MGM still one of the best but it is so large you have to make sure you figure in the time just to get out of the place if going to a show. Vdara is new and know nothing about it. Caesars is one of the oldest properties on the strip and still one of the classiest and best. Their Forum shops is something you just have to see to believe.

That week you are looking at is winter here and temps will be in the 50’s during the day and in the low 40’s at night. Not swimming weather.

what are the top 10 best sci fi movies?
hi i would like to know what your top 10 sci fi movies are
i don’t really mean like ghosts or demons but like travailing to different worlds … umm aliens .. umm element powers…ummm strange stuff happening to the world(((((when i say elements not like super hero movies i.e, superman))))))) weird stuff like that but i really dislike paranormal activity movies
some of my fav. are sci fi, mystery

i also like anime (Japanese cartoons) they have some really cool ones..

like one sci fi i saw recently was called "city of ember",also "district 9" that was a good one so was "doomsday"

PS: im a complete sci fi geek =P
well anything thats not about ghosts or demons

I would say these, however, you’re really limiting it because they’re a lot of sci-fi movies that aren’t ‘out of this world.’

Also, some of these movies are part of a series, so I will include the series as a whole. Some of these aren’t ‘out of this world,’ but this is my list.

Alien (I’d include Aliens as well, but not the other sequels).
Star Trek (I personally like part 2 and part 6, as well as the new one that’s the re-load)
Enemy Mine
Star Wars (obviously, part 3, 4, and 6 are my favorites)
Stargate
Planet of the apes (the original)
Blade Runner *NUMBER ONE FOR SURE*
Terminator
The matrix
The Thing
Generico | Jan 23, 2010

If you like both sci fi and anime then watch the movie Akira, its awesome.
Along with the matrix series there is also the Animatrix, which is basically anime set in the matrix world occurring long before the movies take place.
smishhh | Jan 23, 2010

District 9
The Happening
Knowing
Back To The Future

Sorry all i can think of at the moment
Miss[E]x | Jan 23, 2010

I honestly haven’t seen all that many, and I’ve yet to see a lot of the acclaimed stuff like 2001: A Space Odyssey and Blade Runner, but here are the 10 best I’ve seen:

1. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006)
2. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984)
3. Metropolis (1927)
4. The Iron Giant (1999)
5. Star Wars (I’m just gonna count the series as one so that I can add more)
6. Treasure Planet (2001)
7. A Trip to the Moon (1902)
8. Tron (1982)
9. City of Ember (2008)
10. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005)

Also, Westworld (1973) and Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001) were really cool.

(Looking back) I guess I’m not sure having four animated movies in my top six really does a lot to validate my opinion on such topics :)
valley_dweller | Jan 23, 2010

I don’t know if in this order exactly, but these 10 … ok 25 movies are awesome:

The Philadelphia Experiment

1-Star Wars (obviously)
2- Back to the Future
3-………….idk
Artemis Fowl will be on the list once they make the movie
NYY123 | Jan 24, 2010

A Scanner Darkly. Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, Robert Downey Jr. There’s no way you could do anything but love it.
The Day The Earth Stood Still. Keanu Reeves. It really changed the way I view a lot of things. Like, the entire human race.
The Matrix. Keanu Reeves. The first one is best. Don’t waste your time with the Animatrix. My brain dissolved and melted out my eyes when I saw it.
The Astronaut’s Wife. Johnny Depp comes back from space with an alien inside of him.
Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home. Undoubtedly the best Star Trek movie ever.
Planet Terror, Shaun of the Dead. If you like great zombie films.
Avatar. I saw it a couple hours ago; it blew my mind. The most beautiful movie I’ve ever seen.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The Invasion is the newest remake.
Powder. Sean Patrick Flannery plays a beyond-genius albino kid with electrolosis powerz. Just pure amazing.
2012. Surprisingly good.
The Core. AMAZING.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide To the Galaxy. Read the book because it’s waaaay better.

As for anime, I suggest Princess Monanoke, My Neighbor Totoro, and Spirited Away. My friend really liked Kiki’s Delivery Service and Castle in the Sky, which I have yet to watch. I’m a huge Pokemon fan.

Beowulf & Grendel

Posted by davidperkins1981 on 21st April 2010

Beowulf & Grendel
Beowulf & Grendel (2005)

IMDB rating: 6.10

Plot: The blood-soaked tale of a Norse warrior’s battle against the great and murderous troll, Grendel. Heads will roll. Out of allegiance to the King Hrothgar, the much respected Lord of the Danes, Beowulf leads a troop of warriors across the sea to rid a village of the marauding monster. The monster, Grendel, is not a creature of mythic powers, but one of flesh and blood – immense flesh and raging blood, driven by a vengeance from being wronged, while Beowulf, a victorious soldier in his own right, has become increasingly troubled by the hero-myth rising up around his exploits. Beowulf’s willingness to kill on behalf of Hrothgar wavers when it becomes clear that the King is more responsible for the troll’s rampages than was first apparent. As a soldier, Beowulf is unaccustomed to hesitating. His relationship with the mesmerizing witch, Selma, creates deeper confusion. Swinging his sword at a great, stinking beast is no longer such a simple act. The story is set in barbarous Northern Europe where the reign of the many-gods is giving way to one – the southern invader, Christ. Beowulf is a man caught between sides in this great shift, his simple code transforming and falling apart before his eyes. Vengeance, loyalty and mercy powerfully entwine. A story of blood and beer and sweat, which strips away the mask of the hero-myth, leaving a raw and tangled tale.

How do you interpret the end of the 2007 Beowulf movie ?
First of all, I love the new twists they added to the story. It makes it much more interesting.

However, I find it very nightmarish and desturbing, that they never actually defeat the sea demon (Angelina Jolie).

Basically what we have is;
1) the original king, was seduced by the Sea demon … she bore Grendel to him. And Grendel Plagued the city.

2) Beowulf comes along and kills Grendel. However, Beowulf loses his battle with the sea demon, and lays with her instead. He gives her a golden horn, and promises him that as long as she has it, he will be invincible.

3) The Kings is so estatic to be rid of her curse anyway, that he jumps to his death.

4) Beowulf becomes king only to have his demon son (the dragon, born from the sea demon) attack years later. Beowulf sacrifices himself to kill him.

The movie ends with Beowulf’s loyal Wiglaf standing on the shore, holding the cursed horn and looking at the sea demon.

It would have been so much more satisfying if Wiglaf had thrown the horn back into the ocean, and gone back ashore.

As it is the movie ends nightmarish. You are left thinking "Oh God, don’t tell me the same cycle will start all over again."

Probably just setting up for a sequel.

What is your most liked comic book storyline and what is your least liked? Why?
What is your most liked comic book storyline and what is your least liked? Why?

My favorite was the whole symbiote storyline and the 2099 concept. The idea that there were new Spider-man,Ghost rider,Venom, and so forth. They actually made Doom series which was cool.
I didn’t like the Scarlet Spider thing though it was a little confusing.

FAVS:
Archie and Friends as a kid (Everybody loved them back in the day. Plus you could collect the cool gum wrappers.)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the 20-somethings (Bad boys in the strip, they snorted coke and had orgies before battle. What’s not to love about that?)
Batman (Love all the storylines. The original was campy and great; just what a strip should be. BOOM! POW! Knocked it outa the park!)

Japanese Anime Anything! From Speed Racer to Cowboy BeeBop.

HATED:
Superman (LAME. Hated the storyline. Why didn’t everyone just carry Kryptonite????? And that Lois Lane crush was totally Bogus. Did you know the original actor to portray SM/Clark Kent on TV committed suicide after a serious bout of depression because he was so typecast, he couldn’t book another part? I don’t even remember the poor guys name now. How sad, and over what? Some crappy "Super Hero".) Superman Go Home!

Ps on Spidey: Agreed on the Scarlet Spider. ????

I like the Peter Parker molestation storyline, where Peter was molested by a male babysitter after he went to live with Aunt May. Very bold. Hats off to Stan Lee for that one. Lee’s quote most often quoted: "He who limps is still walking."

Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The
Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The (2008)

IMDB rating: 8.20

Plot: On the day that Hurricane Katrina hits New Orleans, elderly Daisy Williams nee Fuller is on her deathbed in a New Orleans hospital. At her side is her adult daughter, Caroline. Daisy asks Caroline to read to her aloud the diary of Daisy’s lifelong friend, Benjamin Button. Benjamin’s diary recounts his entire extraordinary life, the primary unusual aspect of which was his aging backwards, being born an old man who was diagnosed with several aged diseases at birth and thus given little chance of survival, but who does survive and gets younger with time. Abandoned by his biological father, Thomas Button, after Benjamin’s biological mother died in childbirth, Benjamin was raised by Queenie, a black woman and caregiver at a seniors home. Daisy’s grandmother was a resident at that home, which is where she first met Benjamin. Although separated through the years, Daisy and Benjamin remain in contact throughout their lives, reconnecting in their forties when in age they finally match up. Some of the revelations in Benjamin’s diary are difficult for Caroline to read, especially as it relates to the time past this reconnection between Benjamin and Daisy, when Daisy gets older and Benjamin grows younger into his childhood years.
